Painting Faces

This painting is very small, you can probably tell from the grain of the canvas, Im using sheets of pre-primed canvas. With these sheets I have made a Japanese Binded book, you can see how that turned out in one of my later post here.

When starting the painting I found it helped to quickly sketch out in a thin brown wash the features of the face. I dont usually do this, I normally start off in one area and spread out hoping for the best.

My acrylic red goes very orange when you add white, making it hard to get his pink rosey cheeks.

Did this portrait a while ago, at the time I was struggling to get a natural skin tone as it looks very purple. I spent ages on the nose, well to be honest I took far too long to do this painting, have a look how I did it below.

From Edgware Road to The Kingsgate Show (Reportage)

Reportage Project, need to produce two images capturing the vitality of one of Londons main highways.

The finished work will be put before the judging panel for the kingsgate show, with the possibility that it may be framed and ehibited in a public gallery.

I usaully feel scared to take pictures of people directly near them, but I think drawing in public spaces has helped.

Stood on the corner of the busy street.

Was getting annoyed that I couldt really lock on to anyone to draw from.

Stood under the bridge out of the rain, need to invest in some gloves.

I was happy with this page, I managed to knock out some simple faces in a very crowded station platform.

A few of these were people sat right in front of me.

Hmm?

I have 10 more shots like these, I am going to try some paintings and quick drawings from these which I shall post later on tonite.

Book Binding with Martin

Heres Martins site, he's a kool guy, I wasnt too sure about his book binding sessions at first but I can see them  becoming really useful as we progress through the course.

Japanese Binding

It didnt turn out perfect but it did make a nice binding, and felt very solid. Next time I shall take much more care.

Done using a A4 templates that slot into one another.

With this book, I also created the text you see that covers the front and inside of the book, simply done with an rubber cut into to make a print.

Since making these books, I keep eyeing up other books to see which way they were made.

A simple one binding with stich, more of these batches of pages could be added.

As I said before I enjoyed producing these books and Im going to make it a habit to make these for future sketchbooks and other things, hopefully make some just as good and cheaper than Moleskine's.
